Jamaica is hurting right now. 💔 A catastrophic storm called Melissa — the largest in the island’s recorded history — has likely made landfall. But remember: Jamaicans aren’t just resort workers or entertainers. Many are working-class, resilient, and surviving on less than $3 an hour in many areas, under systems of exploitation that began with colonization and continue through debt and austerity. Even before this disaster, Jamaica was burdened by IMF-imposed austerity and the legacy of empire. Poverty isn’t natural — it’s a policy decision!!! The Caribbean contributes little to global emissions, yet faces the harshest impacts of climate change. The climate crisis won’t be one event, it’ll be a series of catastrophes you’ll first see on your screen, until it reaches you. It's not a conspiracy, this is capitalism. As misinformation spreads, fact-check before you share. Be vigilant. If you can donate, give directly to small, grassroots orgs supporting people on the ground. I’ll list some later. And never forget how much Jamaica has given the world: music, food, language, culture, much of it all born from resistance. Now it’s time to talk about climate debt. The corporations, fossil fuel companies that profit from and caused this crisis owe a debt to humanity: to Jamaica, the Caribbean, and every frontline community. Let’s demand they PAY what they owe.
