Ontario’s health minister says two Canadians who disembarked from a cruise ship hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak have returned home to the province, where they are self-isolating and being monitored by local health authorities. Health Minister Sylvia Jones said Thursday the two people are not believed to be at risk of transmitting the virus. A third Canadian, who wasn’t on the ship but was on the same flight, may have come into contact with a symptomatic individual, according to federal officials. The government said two people are in Ontario and one is in Québec. All three are asymptomatic and have been self-isolating, Foreign Minister Anita Anand said in a statement posted online. Three non-Canadian passengers have died from hantavirus on an Oceanwide Expeditions cruise ship. The virus is typically spread by rodents, but in rare cases, can be transmitted person-to-person. Four Canadians are among the stranded passengers aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship off the west coast of Africa. Consular officials are on their way to the Canary Islands to monitor and assist with the process when they disembark the ship, the government said.
