You’re not responsible for repairing what they broke. Repair is the responsibility of the person who caused the rupture - not the child, no matter how old that child is. For many parents and adult children, that’s a hard truth to accept. As children grow up, they might choose forgiveness or compassion for their parents, and that choice is theirs alone. But the act of repairing, of reaching out and taking accountability, must begin with the parent. If they can’t or won’t initiate it, that’s not yours to carry. You can release it without bitterness. You can grieve what never was and still find peace through forgiveness. Because repair can only come from the one who created the break - and letting go of that burden might be the most healing act of all.
