This is one of the most beautiful places in the world we've EVER visited- French Polynesia. We visited this dream destination a few years ago, and now after visiting almost every country in the world, we can confirm that Bora Bora has some of THE most beautiful blue water in the entire world. The problem is that the Four Seasons Bora Bora (shown in this video) can go for $1500 a night. And I don't know about you, but I don't have that kind of money right now. So here's what I recommend instead. Most of Bora Bora's overwater bungalow resorts are on a stretch of land away from the mainland, meaning you have to pay for a boat to get there plus you're stuck paying for resort food. But the mainland has the same beautiful blue water. So either skip the overwater bungalow, or use credit card points to just spend a night or two in one, checking in as early as you can and checking out as late as you can. And then stay in an AirBnB on the mainland. You can shop at grocery stores and go snorkeling off the shore or pay for a boat tour to similar areas as these resorts - or better yet, choose another island in French Polynesia like Mo'orea that's less expensive than Bora Bora. So no, it's still not a "cheap" destination by any means. But there's ALWAYS a more cost effective way to visit your dream location.
