We have the data that shows how limiting a fixed mindset can be. And we know what type of praise can lead to intrinsic motivation in our children oriented towards a growth mindset. It really is about how we speak to and, in particular, praise our children. If our children grow up with an identity that is oriented towards trying and never giving up, they will feel motivated and excited by those things. If we give them the identity of the smart kid or the kid we don’t need to worry about, they can become obsessed with preserving that status.
