A 58 year old sales engineer from Paris named Ari Hodara just won a Pablo Picasso painting worth over $1 million after purchasing a single raffle ticket for 100 euros, roughly $117. His winning ticket, number 94,715, was drawn at Christie’s auction house in Paris on Tuesday. The painting is “Tête de Femme (Head of a Woman),” a 1941 gouache on paper portrait of Picasso’s longtime muse and partner Dora Maar. Hodara said he only found out about the charity raffle by chance over the weekend while eating at a restaurant and entered on a whim. When organizers called to tell him the news, his first reaction was to ask how he could be sure it wasn’t a prank. The raffle is part of the “1 Picasso for 100 Euros” initiative, now in its third edition, which sold all 120,000 tickets worldwide and raised nearly $13 million for Alzheimer’s research through France’s Alzheimer’s Research Foundation. Previous editions in 2013 and 2020 saw winners in Pennsylvania and Italy take home original Picasso works for the same ticket price.
