Every summer in a tiny mountain village in northern Montenegro, people compete to see who can do absolutely nothing the longest. The Brezna Ethno Village has hosted the “Laziest Citizen” competition since 2011, and the rules couldn’t be simpler. Lie down on a mat. Stay horizontal. Last one still lying down wins a thousand euros. Contestants can eat, sleep, scroll their phones and read, but everything has to happen flat on their backs. Sit up or stand and you’re eliminated immediately. Bathroom breaks are 10 minutes, once every eight hours. In 2023, the competition shattered all previous records when the final two contestants refused to give up for 50 consecutive days before agreeing to share the title. The whole thing was created by local resort owner Radonja Blagojevic as a tongue in cheek response to the old Balkan stereotype that Montenegrins are lazy. What started as a joke now draws competitors from across the region and international media coverage every August. The prize is a thousand euros.
