I used to think the lesson was about forgiving them. The ones who betrayed you. The ones who walked away. The ones who benefited from your loyalty and left you holding the bill. But that wasn’t my lesson. My lesson was forgiving the version of me who tolerated what she shouldn’t have. Who shrank to keep the peace. Who swallowed her voice so no one else would be uncomfortable. That version of me isn’t shameful. She was surviving with the self-worth she had at the time. But she doesn’t get to come with me to the next destination.
