In 2012, Salvadoran fisherman José Salvador Alvarenga left for what was supposed to be a short two-day fishing trip alongside 22-year-old Ezequiel Córdoba. But after a violent storm dragged their boat deep into the Pacific Ocean and destroyed the motor, the two men were left stranded at sea with no way back. To stay alive, they survived off raw fish, turtles, rainwater, and even bird blood while drifting endlessly across the ocean. After around 10 weeks, Córdoba became severely ill and died, leaving Alvarenga completely alone in the middle of the Pacific. Isolated for months, he later admitted he began hallucinating conversations with his deceased friend before finally pushing the body into the sea. Against all odds, Alvarenga survived a staggering 438 days lost at sea. He eventually drifted nearly 6,700 miles before reaching Ebon Atoll, where he swam ashore and found help from local residents. His survival story later became the subject of the book “438 Days.” After the story gained worldwide attention, Córdoba’s family accused Alvarenga of cannibalism and filed a $1 million lawsuit against him.
