For many of us, we have rules, boundaries, and expectations for our children for a number of reasons. Maybe it's because we want them to eat healthy or learn how to treat people with respect. But something that may get overlooked is the fact that these things actually make our children feel safe. They need to believe that they can count on you. That they have some predictability and structure in their lives. Having consistency and expectations with something like a nightly routine, for example, can actually better establish a sense of safety and calm for our children. So the next time you're setting clear expectations in the form of boundaries or routine, remember that these things can support safety in your children, even if they don't outwardly show it with every decision.
