While we don't want to intentionally hurt anyone, we do. And we always will. But there's this interesting phenomenon associated with close relationships where our mistakes, if followed by repair, can actually strengthen our bonds with others. It is impossible for us not to create these "tears" or ruptures from time to time. It's simply inevitable. But when we follow up with repair, we build trust and connection. We also model to our children how to apologize and make amends for our mistakes.
