Neanderthals were far from the primitive “cavemen” they’re often portrayed as. These early humans, Homo neanderthalensis, inhabited Europe and western Asia between 400,000 and 40,000 years ago, thriving through the challenges of the Ice Age. They shared about 99.7% of our DNA and had powerful builds, broad noses, and strong brows suited to cold climates. Yet, beyond their physical toughness, Neanderthals showed remarkable intelligence and emotional depth. They crafted tools, mastered fire, made clothing, and buried their dead, clear signs of complex thought and social bonds. Archaeologists have also uncovered evidence of symbolic art and adornment, suggesting creativity and self-awareness. They interbred with early modern humans, leaving genetic traces that still exist in most non-African populations today. Their extinction remains uncertain, likely caused by shifting climates, diseases, and competition with Homo sapiens, but their presence lives on, written quietly into our DNA and human story.
