Do you sing, rap, host, perform comedy or anything else in front of a crowd? Well, negotiating pay and deciding precisely when or where you're going to perform is paramount. Most artists are either new, emerging or advanced in their careers. If you're just starting out, perform as much as possible. If you're emerging, be a little bit more strategic about when you rock a crowd. Once you consider yourself advanced, be very SELECTIVE. I promise you'll thank me later. Sure, have fun and show up to open mics or volunteer here and there but don't perform all the time. Go on tour for that. My last live show wasn't perfect, but I got paid $1000 and that was fair bc I put a lot of labor into planning my sets. I'm also at a point in my career where I can secure funding, curate, host, promote and perform in my own show. Why should I settle for very little money??
