Sammy Jean Davis just received her high school diploma at 102 years old, more than eight decades after she was forced to leave school in the eighth grade. She sat among the Hazel Green High School class of 2026 in Alabama and walked across the stage she never got the chance to walk as a young woman. Davis got married in 1939 during the Great Depression and left her education behind to help run her family's businesses, work the farm, raise children and serve her church. Despite never finishing school, she went on to manage a family business and later worked at the University of Mississippi before retiring. She is also a cancer survivor. When her daughter asked what advice she would give to the graduating class, Davis didn't hesitate: study, and go to church. "I am so excited about having a diploma," she said.
