Something that feels as though it's a part of older parenting strategies is the idea that we need to manufacture challenges for children so we can teach them resilience. My experience in studying newer parenting educators and psychologists is that the idea that we would need to manufacture such moments is unnecessary. Life is hard. Our children will encounter all kinds of challenges and painful moments. As long as we don't shield them from the world, they will encounter challenges and opportunities to work through problems and emotions in a way that they will get to build resilience. What we can do as parents is lend support and help them to navigate the turmoil they encounter when these moments inevitably arise. We simply need to let them live life, encounter challenges, and be there to help them through those hard times when they come. The byproduct is a person who knows how to handle challenges and tolerable stresses (in other words, a person who is resilient in the face of difficult moments and hard times).
