When designing our kitchen, I got so much pushback on these things. Here are the reasons I was told not to do them: 1. Turned our formal dining room into a butler’s pantry: Everyone thought I’d need a formal dining room for family gatherings. I opted for a butler’s pantry that we use every single day over a formal dining room that we’d maybe use a couple times a year. Plus, we still had room for a large table in our kitchen. For us, it was well worth giving up the formal dining room. 2. Marble countertops: Majority of people are misinformed about marble. The truth is, if sealed properly, marble is a great option for kitchen countertops. There’s a reason this material has been used for thousands of years and has stood the test of time. 3. Walnut countertop: While wood can scratch easily, if sealed properly, these countertops can last decades. The best part about it is, you can always sand and restain it and it will look brand new. 4. Decorative toe kicks: Dust and food can get caught under the toe kicks but it’s an easy fix (vacuuming) for such a beautiful design detail. 5. Bookshelf: Some think it’s a waste of space but breaking up the cabinets with a bookshelf adds so much character that it’s worth the trade off. 6. Mixed metals: This is really just a preference. Some people like the look and some don’t. In my opinion, you can mix up to three metals in a space if done tastefully and intentionally. 7. Farmhouse sink: The exposed front can easily lead to splashes and drips which can cause water damage to the surrounding cabinets and floors. We added a drip ledge to avoid this issue. 8. Lots of glass cabinets: We were told not to do glass cabinets if we didn’t want to be cleaning constantly and keeping everything in them organized all the time. Honestly, I think I’ve had to clean the glass twice in the year that we’ve been here. I also don’t mind if it’s not always perfect inside the cabinets because it adds to the lived in charm.
