Your child shouldn’t have to earn love. True attachment is unconditional - a child should be welcomed in the world simply for who they are, not for how they act, achieve, or please. He describes unconditional love as being completely accepted, as you are. That kind of love gives children the rest they need to grow. They don’t have to perform to keep the relationship secure. When kids feel they must be the peacemaker, the high achiever, or the “easy one” to stay loved, they start working to hold the connection together. And that burden quietly shapes their emotional development. Unconditional attachment also means letting kids experience the full range of their feelings knowing those emotions will be met with understanding, not rejection. It makes us wonder: how often do kids learn that love must be earned, when all they ever needed was to be seen?
