A deadly hantavirus outbreak has the world watching a cruise ship anchored off the coast of Cape Verde. The MV Hondius left Argentina last month with 149 people on board. Three are now dead. Seven cases have been identified so far. This week three more passengers were evacuated, and another previously on board tested positive in Switzerland. Some passengers already got off the ship before this hit international news. A Dutch woman went ashore in Saint Helena on April 24 with symptoms. She collapsed at an airport in South Africa and died the next day. Her husband had already passed away on board. A British passenger who left at Saint Helena is now in ICU in Johannesburg. Hantavirus spreads through contact with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. The strain on the ship is the Andes virus, the only known type that can pass from one person to another, and only rarely, mostly between people sharing the same cabin or bed. It is not airborne the way COVID is. WHO says the global risk is low. No travel restrictions. No lockdowns. But about 38 percent of people who develop respiratory symptoms die from it, so the response is serious. Spain is preparing to let the ship dock in the Canary Islands for full screening and disinfection. Short answer on whether this is another COVID.
