We've all done what Dr. Becky describes here: made the decision to do something for our children that maybe we should have allowed them to do for themselves. Maybe it's because we're running late. Maybe it's because we sense a tantrum coming on and we don't want to deal with it. If you've done that, don't sweat it. We all do. It's normal. But we also need to be conscious of how our decisions impact our children. Doing everything for them isn't preparing them for life, and it's not teaching them important skills like frustration tolerance and persistence. So, while you don't need to allow them to struggle every time, it's important for us to realize the value in giving our children the opportunity to build these skills.
