School has quietly stolen childhood freedom. Dr. Peter Gray explains that childhood has changed in ways we hardly notice. Bit by bit, school has taken a larger role in children’s lives - longer school years, heavier homework, less recess, and more pressure to measure learning by grades. As a culture, we’ve grown obsessed with the idea that what kids learn in school is the most important learning they do. But that comes at a cost. With every generation, we’ve given up more of the freedom kids once had to play, explore, and discover the world for themselves. It didn’t happen overnight. The changes were so gradual that most of us didn’t see them happening. But if we jumped straight from the childhoods of the 1950s to today’s tightly structured lives, we would have called it unthinkable.
