Your child can't learn to regulate emotions they're not allowed to feel. Dr. Becky explains that kids don’t learn emotional regulation by being corrected out of big feelings. They learn it by experiencing those feelings with us in a safe, connected way. A tantrum isn’t a child trying to manipulate or disrespect you. It’s a child saying: “My feelings are bigger than the skills I have to manage them.” When we punish or shut down those emotions, kids don’t become calmer. They become more overwhelmed, more ashamed, and more disconnected. None of those states are conducive for regulation skill development. When we acknowledge the feeling and hold the limit, kids slowly learn what to do with big emotions. They develop the skill their feelings were asking for. It makes us wonder: What if emotional regulation starts with letting kids feel (and not fear) their own emotions?
