A few years ago I went super viral on this app for spreading the “What’s a scam that’s so normalized we don’t even notice it?” trend. So in the spirit of going back in time, here’s one more: We were told growing up to “always tell the truth.” What they didn’t tell us is that if you take that advice at face value, you’ll likely be hated, ostracized, and exhausted. The real lesson should’ve been: Tell the truth in ways people can actually hear. As someone who deeply loves truth, I had to learn communication, active listening, and discernment—meeting people where they’re at and knowing whether they can even handle the truth yet. And if they can’t, figuring out how to create the conditions where they might someday hear it. And sometimes folks are determined to misunderstand you. They're never going to listen. And it’s better to abandon the desire to convince them than to waste your precious energy. This matters especially right now with the rise of authoritarianism We’re not just dealing with misinformation or disinformation—we’re in a moment where you can’t even trust what you’re seeing with your own eyes. We don’t have infinite time or energy. The scam is adults tell us being a truth teller will make your life easier.
