If you have to poop IMMEDIATELY after eating, it’s not because the food just moved straight through you. What’s happening is the gastrocolic reflex — when food hits your stomach, your body senses incoming volume and essentially prepares to “make room.” It stimulates the colon to contract and move stool forward to create space for what’s coming next. In people with IBS, this reflex can be heightened, leading to stronger and faster colon contractions that trigger a bowel movement within minutes. The stool was already in the colon. Eating simply stimulated movement. Common triggers that amplify the gastrocolic reflex: • Large meals • High-fat meals • Caffeine (especially coffee) • Very cold beverages • High-FODMAP foods (in sensitive individuals) • Spicy foods • Anxiety and acute stress • Nicotine • Artificial sweeteners (sorbitol, mannitol) What can help: • Eat smaller, more frequent meals • Reduce high-fat trigger meals • Slow down while eating • Manage stress and nervous system activation • Consider soluble fiber to regulate stool consistency • Identify and reduce personal food triggers If this is frequent, painful, wakes you from sleep, or is associated with weight loss or bleeding, seek medical evaluation #medical #diarrhea #poop #guthealth #ibs
