Their feelings are big in a different way than they are when they are young children. Things that everyone goes through—things that in the grand scheme of life will be very minor—seem enormous. And we will feel for them because we will recall our own experiences as teenagers when our kids encounter these obstacles. But we need to find and keep our calm. Our kids need that from us, and even though our teen may come in emotional, erratic, and defensive, we need to find a way to be a calm presence for them in the midst of their storm. And we need to find a way to do it without diminishing their pain or frustration, which can be so easy to do. Just like a tantrum when our kids are young, we need to find stability and connection first. If we can do that, we'll have a much better opportunity to provide our kids what they need.
