These funds sound like good investments in theory. They are funds that are designed to automatically rebalance your portfolio as you age, shifting from growth investments into more conservative ones as you get closer to retirement. That convenience is great for a lot of people. But personally, in my 20s I felt they were a little too conservative for where I’m at. A few reasons: • The bond allocation felt higher than I wanted that early in life • Some target date funds have slightly higher expense ratios • I’m comfortable rebalancing my portfolio myself later on So instead, most of my retirement investments are currently in an S&P 500 growth fund, which focuses on large cap companies. My plan is to gradually rebalance into more conservative investments as I get closer to retirement. Everyone’s strategy will look different and this is just what works best for me right now.
