But we need to remember how hard it is for our kids to regulate their emotions. They have experienced so little, and their brain requires so much development. It's second nature to console a child and say things like "you're okay" or "it's not a big deal, we need to calm down." But we need to understand that, to the child, the feelings are very real. Their mind and body are telling them something is happening that requires a reaction. Over time, your child will begin to better understand their own emotions and regulate. The tantrums will disappear, and the anger, frustration, and sadness will appear less often. When the feelings do appear, they will be sensical reactions to real problems. Until then, your child needs to learn. Your job is to give them the space and patience to do that. If you do, your child will grow up with a strong understanding of their own self and how to properly navigate their own mental battles.
