I only *kind of* played piano growing up. I’d put on headphones and try to figure things out by ear, note for note. Even after I learned music theory in college, I still never really practiced anything. Then I took a job as a worship pastor at a church where I was required to play keys for something just about weekly, and I quickly realized I had a lot of catching up to do or I wasn’t going to cut it. So I dug in and practiced. For the 11 years that I worked there I just played and played. A lot of times I was tempted to think that me sitting at the piano was an ill-use of work hours, but I kept reminding myself that it mattered - to my choir, to my band, to the church, and to God. I’m not near where I want to be - I still don’t have any “chops” to save my life. But I’m definitely a lot closer to being able to sit down and play what I hear in my head. Nowadays it’s way more fun than it is work. This is your sign to put in the time. Log the hours. Keep showing up in secret. Even if you never end up on a huge “platform”, you’ll be able to accurately express your musical ideas and it’ll be worth it #piano #keys #worship #practice #music
