Punishment teaches kids to suppress feelings, not manage them. When kids are punished again and again for certain behaviors, they don’t just learn “this behavior is wrong.” They learn that the feeling underneath it is wrong: anger, frustration, overwhelm. No one is teaching them how to handle that feeling. So their body tries to protect them the only way it knows how: by shutting it down. But feelings don’t disappear because we suppress them. When kids believe their emotions are unsafe or unacceptable, those emotions come out sideways as more acting out, bigger explosions, or repeated behavior problems. That’s the paradox Dr. Becky points to: Punishment meant to stop behavior often makes it worse. Real change doesn’t come from teaching kids to hide their feelings. It comes from teaching them how to manage them. It makes us wonder: What if the behavior we want to stop is actually telling us the skill our child needs to learn?
