Particularly those parents that dealt with overbearing parents in those situations when they were children. Maybe your parents made you play basketball all the way through high school even though you didn't enjoy it. Or maybe you did gymnastics for 7 years when you were younger even though you asked to quit every year until they finally gave in. These can generate some tough feelings around quitting when your children decide they want to stop doing something. As Dr. Pressman points out. We want our children to learn how to participate on a team, and we want them to face challenges and tough times in these kinds of activities without immediately giving into the discomfort and quitting. Sports and other activities really do simulate the challenges of life in low stake situations. This is great for our kids to an extent. I really like Dr. Pressman's advice on making some decisions beforehand. If your child is really young, you may want to have that discussion with your spouse or another trusted adult figure in the child's life. If they are older, you can discuss it with them so everyone understands the expectations. I also really like Angela Duckworth's advice to never quit on a bad day. I think that single rule could be the best one in helping a child to understand what they really want out of the activity and what they might not. What do you think?
