Could GLP-1 medications help slow cancer progression? A new Cleveland Clinic study found those taking GLP-1s were less likely to develop stage IV disease in several cancer types, when compared to patients taking another diabetes medication, DPP-4 inhibitors. The findings are being presented this weekend at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Annual Meeting. Researchers looked at health records for more than 10,000 patients with seven types of cancer: lung, breast, colorectal, liver, prostate, pancreatic and kidney. In four cancer types, the GLP-1 group was less likely to develop stage IV cancer: ▪️Lung cancer - 50% risk reduction ▪️Breast cancer - 43% risk reduction ▪️Liver cancer - 38% risk reduction ▪️Colorectal cancer - 31% risk reduction In the other three cancers - prostate, pancreatic and kidney - the GLP-1 group had fewer instances of stage IV disease, but the differences were not statistically significant. These are still early findings. Ongoing research will look at how GLP-1s may control cancer progression.
