Argentina is set to become the eighth country to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem after President Javier Milei said during his third official visit to Israel that the move would go forward “as soon as conditions allow”. Milei first announced the plan in February 2024 and reaffirmed it in June 2025 in a speech at the Knesset, saying the move would be carried out in 2026. While Israel claims the entire city as its “undivided capital”, Palestinians see occupied East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state, in line with longstanding international consensus and UN resolutions. Israel illegally occupied East Jerusalem in 1967 and later annexed it in 1980 in a move not recognised by the international community. The UN Security Council rejected the annexation in Resolution 478 and called on countries to withdraw their diplomatic missions from Jerusalem.
