This is a part of your job as a parent. And that never changes. As the parent, one thing we never get to do, no matter how old we get, is place the responsibility in the relationship on our children. That may feel a little bit hyperbolic, but it's not. No matter how old your child gets, you made a decision to bring them into the world and raise them. At some level, you expected the responsibility as the parent. If you aren't going to take responsibility to the end, why should your child pick it up for you? If you're on the other side of this and looking at things from the child's perspective: This doesn't mean that you can't support a parent, even one that treated you badly, into their old age. Or to try to make amends for things that didn't feel right about your upbringing. But also understand that it's not your job to "fix" the relationship. If you want to patch some of those things for your own peace or growth or whatever your reasoning may be, great. But it's not your responsibility to mend what they didn't care to create in your upbringing. That is and always will be the parent's job.
