Can you imagine having the fear of your family and friends shaming you for the rest of your life if you fail one event?! This is the most intense and chaotic event we've ever witnessed - Hud even said it was more captivating than the Superbowl! The event is called a "bull jumping ceremony" and is practiced by the Hamar tribe in Ethiopia. It's like a huge family reunion - with serious consequences. There are many different parts of the ceremony throughout the night leading up to the bull jump. When we arrived, the women of the family were running up to the men begging to be whipped with reeds (they see this as a sign of respect and honor for their brother/son/nephew). This was honestly really graphic and personally hard to watch. But we are here to learn about their culture, not to change it. Then there was dancing and drinking (the local beer which we posted about before - which is kind of warm and grainy) for a couple hours until everyone walks a couple miles to the spot of the bull jump. There, the boy strips down naked and his family pours milk on his feet to prepare him for the biggest event of his life - running across the backs of bulls.
