Safety and Reporting: Protecting Yourself and Others
Tools and resources for staying safe on Whistlr Network
Your safety on Whistlr Network is our highest priority. We provide comprehensive tools for controlling your experience, protecting your privacy, and reporting harmful content or behavior. Understanding these safety features empowers you to create a positive, secure environment for yourself while contributing to platform-wide safety through responsible reporting of violations.
Reporting Content and Users: Your First Line of Defense Every post, comment, profile, and message includes a report button that enables immediate flagging of policy violations. When reporting, select the specific violation type (harassment, hate speech, violence, spam, etc.), provide additional context if helpful, and submit. Reports are reviewed by trained moderators typically within 48 hours, with priority given to child safety, violence, and harassment reports. You'll receive notification when action is taken, though specific details may be limited for privacy reasons.
Effective reporting helps keep Whistlr safe for everyone. Be specific about which guideline is violated, provide relevant context that moderators might not see, report genuine violations rather than content you simply disagree with, and avoid report abuse which may result in restrictions on your reporting privileges. Your reports are confidential, and the reported user will not know who submitted the report.
Blocking and Muting: Control Your Experience Blocking prevents specific users from viewing your profile, sending you messages, commenting on your posts, or interacting with your content in any way. The blocked user is not notified but will notice they can no longer access your content. Muting is a softer option that hides a user's content from your feeds without preventing them from seeing your content. Use blocking for harassment or unwanted contact, and muting for users whose content you'd prefer not to see without completely cutting off interaction.
  • Privacy Controls: Set profile visibility, control who can message you, manage who can see your posts, restrict comment permissions, and hide your activity status from specific users or everyone
  • Content Filtering: Filter sensitive content, hide posts containing specific words or phrases, control what content appears in your feeds, and customize content warnings for different types of media
  • Location Privacy: Control location sharing granularity, disable location features entirely, manage location history, and prevent location-based discovery when desired
  • Two-Factor Authentication: Enable multi-factor authentication for account security, use authenticator apps or SMS codes, manage trusted devices, and receive login alerts for suspicious activity
  • Crisis Resources: Access mental health resources, connect with crisis hotlines, receive wellness checks when expressing distress, and find support communities for various challenges
  • Parental Controls: For users 13-17, parents can enable additional safety features, content restrictions, contact limitations, and activity monitoring with teen's awareness
  • Data Privacy: Download your data, delete your account and data, control data sharing with third parties, and understand how your information is used through transparent privacy policies
  • Trusted Contacts: Designate trusted contacts who can help with account recovery, receive emergency location sharing, and assist with safety concerns
Emergency Situations: Immediate Help and Resources If you're experiencing an emergency or immediate danger, contact local emergency services (911 in the US) immediately. For mental health crises, contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (US) or your local crisis hotline. Whistlr provides in-app crisis resources and can initiate wellness checks when users express suicidal ideation or imminent danger. We cooperate with emergency services and may disclose user information without consent when necessary to prevent imminent harm.
We believe that user safety requires both robust technical tools and human support systems. Our safety features are designed to give you control over your experience while our moderation team works behind the scenes to remove harmful content and users. However, no system is perfect, which is why we encourage users to be proactive about their safety, use available tools, report violations, and reach out for help when needed. Your well-being matters more than any platform feature or policy.
Child Safety: Special Protections for Minors: Users under 18 receive enhanced privacy protections including restricted default privacy settings, limited contact from adults they don't know, content filtering for age-appropriate material, and parental notification options for users 13-17. We comply with COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) and do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. Accounts found to belong to users under 13 are immediately deleted with parental notification.
Configuring Your Safety Settings Navigate to Settings > Privacy & Safety to access comprehensive safety controls. Review and adjust profile visibility settings, configure who can contact you, set up content filters, enable two-factor authentication, manage blocked and muted users, and customize notification preferences. We recommend reviewing these settings regularly and adjusting them as your needs change. Our safety wizard can help you configure optimal settings based on your usage patterns and concerns.
Recognizing and Avoiding Scams: Be cautious of users requesting money, offering too-good-to-be-true opportunities, asking for personal information, pressuring you to act quickly, or using emotional manipulation. Whistlr will never ask for your password, request payment outside official channels, or demand immediate action. Report suspicious accounts and messages immediately. Never share sensitive personal information, financial details, or account credentials with other users, even if they claim to be Whistlr staff.
Supporting Others in Crisis If you see content suggesting someone is in crisis or danger, report it immediately using the crisis reporting option. Reach out to the person with supportive messages if appropriate, share crisis resources including hotline numbers, and avoid judgment or dismissive responses. For immediate danger, contact emergency services. Your report may trigger a wellness check or intervention that could save a life. We take all crisis reports seriously and respond with urgency and care.
Safety Education and Resources: Whistlr provides comprehensive safety education including guides for parents and teens, resources for recognizing and reporting abuse, information about online safety best practices, and connections to expert organizations specializing in digital safety, mental health, and crisis intervention. We partner with leading safety organizations including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, Crisis Text Line, and the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative to provide expert resources and support.
